The Person Who Arrives Is Never the One Who Started

I've always wondered whether the destination waiting for us might be very different from the one we imagined when we first began.
Last week, I wrote that rhythm carries us from where we are to where we hope to be, one small step at a time.
But what if reality turns out to be richer than we imagined?
Ba Na Hills gave me my answer.
Before we went, I had done my research. I knew we would visit the famous Golden Bridge, and I knew there was a French-inspired village on top of the mountain.
But as the cable car doors opened, I stood still for a moment.
Nothing I had read had prepared me for what it actually felt like to be there.
The village was a living place filled with cafés, gardens, a cathedral, music, hidden streets and people from all over the world wandering through the clouds.
In that moment, I realised something.
Some experiences refuse to be understood from a distance!
Problem: We Try to Know Before We Experience
Whether we are changing careers, moving abroad, starting a business or stepping into leadership, we naturally search for certainty before taking the next step.
We read books, watch videos, listen to podcasts and ask for advice.
Research matters.
It gives us enough confidence to begin.
What it cannot do is let us borrow someone else's experience.

Insight: Experience Changes the Person Who Arrives
Last week I wrote that:
Rhythm closes the gap between goals and habits.
Ba Na Hills added two more layers to that idea.
Research closes the gap between uncertainty and action.
Experience closes the gap between expectation and reality.
The person who stepped into that cable car was not the same person who stepped out at the top of the mountain.
The destination had not changed. I had.
Every meaningful experience leaves us with more than memories.
It reshapes our perspective, our priorities and sometimes even our identity.
By the time we reach a goal, we are rarely the same person who first decided to pursue it.
3 ideas to experiment with this week
While reflecting on this experience, I listened to Yale philosopher L.A.Paul’s interview "Your Biggest Life Decisions can’t be Made Rationally".
Her work explores a powerful idea: some of life's most meaningful experiences cannot be fully understood before we live them because they do more than give us new information.
They transform the person having the experience. As I listened, I found myself thinking about Ba Na Hills again. I had researched the destination. Only living it allowed me to understand it.
3 ideas to take with you
💎 Use your research as a roadmap to take the first step.
💎 Pay attention to who you are becoming, not only to where you are going.
💎 Leave room for discoveries that no plan could have predicted.

A Human Performance Architecture Reflection:
Plans give us direction.
Rhythm keeps us moving.
Experience expands the way we see ourselves and the world around us.
The beauty of moving forward is discovering what could never be seen from where we started.

If you feel stuck or uncertain about what comes next in your life or career, coaching can help you gain clarity, see new possibilities and turn them into meaningful steps forward.
Together, we can design a path that builds on your strengths, feels genuinely yours, and keeps evolving as you do. I'd be honoured to support you along the way.
