Why Human Performance and Business Performance Are Deeply Connected

What connects a small team building something new with a global organization employing thousands of people?

Last week, I participated in a two-day SimuPro leadership simulation, exploring how business decisions, communication, and collaboration influence enterprise-wide performance.

On Tuesday evening, I switched roles to co-host The Unspoken Truths About Change Management in 2026 with Cornelia Walter, exploring how organizational change affects the  people experiencing it.

Having spent years in corporate leadership, followed by many more coaching professionals across industries and continents, these two experiences reminded me why I find the connection between people and organizational performance so fascinating.

Problem: Seeing Only Part of the Picture

Organizations resemble living organisms.

People are their cells, teams their tissues, and departments their organs. Each has a function, yet the whole depends on how effectively these parts interact.

Whether in a small business or a multinational corporation, strategic decisions influence human behaviour, while individual actions influence collective results.

Yet we often approach organizational performance and individual development separately.

Insight: People and Systems Shape Each Other

Our change management workshop explored how organizational decisions affect people's emotions, behaviours, and capacity to adapt.

SimuPro illustrated the reverse: how leaders' decisions about priorities, resources, and people influence the performance of the wider business.

Together, they revealed a continuous, interconnected loop.

In her TEDx talk, What Leaders Need to Know About Change, Taylor Harrell explores how resistance to change can reflect concerns about losing security, autonomy, belonging, or identity.

Understanding these human experiences matters when organizations expect people to embrace new directions. Because human performance and organizational performance continuously shape each other.

3 Things That Can Help

💎 Give yourself perspective. On difficult days, when everything feels overwhelming, remember that you are seeing only part of a bigger picture. Give yourself time before drawing conclusions.

💎 Find one thing you can influence. When decisions disappoint you or circumstances feel beyond your control, identify one small action you can take. Even a conversation or a question can help you regain a sense of direction.

💎 Stay connected. We sometimes withdraw when things get difficult. Reach out, share what you are experiencing, and listen to others. You may discover perspectives and possibilities you couldn't see alone.

A Human Performance Architecture Reflection:

Even on days when our individual contributions feel small, we are still shaping something bigger than ourselves.

Try looking at your role from a different perspective: If you were leading your team or the entire organization, what would you expect from yourself today? What could you contribute, and how?

A Closing Reflection

My architectural background taught me to understand how systems work. Corporate leadership taught me to consider business results.

Today, through coaching, I focus on helping people develop the capacity to perform within these complex environments.

Because understanding human performance also means understanding the systems that shape it.

What helps you stay effective and connected when your professional environment becomes challenging?

Warmly,

Dilek
