The Part Nobody Sees Before a Big Change

In a few weeks, I will be leaving Vienna and spending several weeks in Asia.

When people hear that, they usually imagine the trip itself.

The flights, the cities, the experiences.

But what occupies my mind these days is something entirely different.

Preparing future workshops and coaching sessions.

Planning blog content. Working on business development. Creating space for new collaborations and projects.

Then there is preparation at home.

Creating routines that will support our family while we are away.Thinking about health, nutrition, learning, movement, and shared experiences.

And there is another layer to plan.

People we hope to meet. Tai Chi and Qi Gong practices. Cooking classes and local experiences.

Because over the years, I have learned something important:

The quality of an experience is determined long before the experience begins, and good preparation is a performance multiplier.

Problem: We Focus on the Event, Not the Preparation

Most people think about change as an event.

A new role. A move to another country. A health goal.

We focus on the starting date and assume that is where the story begins.

But the visible change is often the final chapter of a much longer process.

People want more confidence, resilience, energy, and clarity.

Yet they often expect themselves to perform inside a new reality they have not fully prepared for.

This is where change management and performance psychology offer an important insight:

Success is often determined by the systems, habits, and environments we build before the moment arrives.

Solution: Build the Foundation Before You Need It

My background is in architecture, as many of you know.

Architecture teaches us that the visible structure is never the whole story.

The building that eventually stands above the ground depends on what was prepared underneath it.

Human transitions work in a surprisingly similar way.

The visible outcome is often supported by months of invisible preparation:

Physical. Mental. Emotional. Practical.

One of my favourite ideas comes from James Clear:

"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."

Many of us focus on the destination. But sustainable performance is usually built through routines, environments, relationships, and preparation long before results become visible.

3 Ways to Prepare for Your Next Change

💎 Design your future environment before you enter it.

Focus on routines, people, and conditions that will make success easier once the transition begins.

💎 Build capacity before demand arrives.

Do not wait until life becomes demanding before investing in energy, health, and recovery.

💎 Prepare your identity, not only your logistics.

What can ‘Future Me’ thank ‘Present Me’ for preparing today?

Meaningful change is often built in the invisible work that nobody sees.
