The Confidence Drift No One Really Talks About

Across industries and countries, I keep hearing a similar reflection from experienced professionals and leaders:
“I thought I would feel more confident at this stage.”
But what they describe next is something else.

They pause more before answering.
They think longer before deciding.
Not because they are less capable. But because they are seeing more than they used to.
More complexity.
More perspectives.
More consequences.
And somewhere in that expansion, confidence starts to feel different.
Less natural. Almost as if it is drifting away.
Maybe their confidence is exactly what this moment calls for, grounded in what they have already achieved and supported by a deeper awareness.
Problem: When increased awareness feels like decreased confidence

As responsibility grows, so does what needs to be held.
Decisions are interconnected. Actions carry wider impact.
And outcomes are less predictable.
With that, thinking evolves.
Less certainty. More consideration.
From the outside, this can look like hesitation.
From the inside, it can feel like a drop in confidence.
Solution: Understanding what confidence is adapting to
Think of the Eiffel Tower.
Its strength comes from responding to pressure.
In strong winds, it moves.
Slightly, but intentionally.
That movement is part of what keeps the structure stable.
Professional growth follows a similar logic.
As your scope expands, your ‘internal structure’ adjusts.
You process more.
You evaluate more.
You anticipate more.
What feels like instability and the loss in confidence are often signs that you are becoming ready for the next level!
In her book "Presence", Amy Cuddy explains that confidence is about staying connected to your abilities under pressure, not only about competence.
She describes “presence” as the ability to access your full capacity when it matters most.
Which means confidence is not something you permanently have.
It is something you learn to return to.
Professionals who I see move through this phase effectively tend to:
💎 Recognise the phase they are in and they stay connected to themselves even when the situation feels stretching.
💎 Remind themselves of their experiences, strengths, and past impact.
💎 Move forward and confidence is formed through action.
It is important to see that in these moments, confidence is adjusting to a more complex reality rather than disappearing.

If you recognise this kind of drift in yourself, becoming more reflective, more cautious, or questioning more as you grow, it is not a signal to step back.
It is a moment to move forward with greater awareness.
This is where a different kind of confidence begins to form.
If you want to navigate this phase with more clarity and direction, for yourself or within your organisation, I would be glad to support you to navigate your professional development with consciousness and leadership development with ease. Just reach out!
