How Do You Define Your Professional Identity, Really?

A few days ago, a dear coachee of mine said something I didn’t expect.

“Dilek, you're not just a career or leadership coach for me. You helped me design who I am personally and professionally, and I want to thank you for these soul talks!”
I felt genuinely happy hearing that.
Because it captured something I care deeply about, the idea that our work is not only about what we do, but also about who we become in the process.
There is a version of you forming at work.
Through what you accept. What you repeat. What you stop questioning.
And over time, this becomes your professional identity.
Here is how you define and design it with purpose.
Problem: Acting Without Defining Who You Are
Many professionals take action before they define their identity. They say yes to opportunities without being clear on their direction. They react to expectations without knowing their own values. They grow into roles without choosing who they want to become inside them.
And over time, this creates something I often observe:
a kind of identity earthquake.
Solution: Identity Needs Intention
In design, nothing meaningful is left to chance. There is always a decision behind it. The same applies to your professional identity. If you don’t define it, your environment will shape it for you.
And at some point, you realise you have adapted more than you have chosen.
A Perspective That Adds Depth
While reading this inspiring book ‘Impact’ by Think Beyond Group founder & owner Masha Ibeschitz, I noticed something beyond how coaching is presented as a powerful tool for development through anonymised and altered cases.
I couldn’t help but delve into different professionals’ lives, their ways of thinking, deciding and showing up.
Main takeaway?
Professional identity is not fixed. It is something that is constantly evolving.
Through coaching, mentoring, or strong leadership, people begin to access their internal resources differently.
They become more intentional.
More effective. More aligned in how they contribute.
A SMALL PAUSE FOR YOU!
Before you continue, I would love to ask you something:

Here is my PODCAST EPISODE ON THINK BEYOND TALKS where Anne and I talk about how you can build resilience to lead yourself and others through change, which is a key topic for the ever-growing professional identity.
Three Ways to Start Designing It
💎 Interrupt one pattern you’ve been repeating without questioning
💎 Choose one behaviour that reflects your next level and act on it
💎 Spend time in environments and communities that expand how you see yourself
Professional identity is never built alone. It is shaped in context. Through people and communities. Through what feels normal around you.

If this resonates, maybe it’s time to approach your career differently. Not just as a series of decisions, but as something you consciously design. A structure that reflects who you are and how you want to contribute to life.
If you feel ready for that kind of exploration, I would be glad to open that space together.
