"Let Go" to Speed Up: Clearing What No Longer Serves You Before Q4

Updated: Sep 10

Every September, I try to keep up with a small ritual.

In the first days back from holidays, I walk through my apartment and notice things I usually overlook during the busy months. There is a shelf too cluttered or a chair that never really gets used. Before I get “blinded” to them again, I make a few refreshing changes rearranging, decluttering, or finding a more practical use.

The same often happens in my work. With a fresh pair of eyes, I try to update the systems I use, simplify some processes, and let go of methods that once felt useful but no longer help me move forward.

September, to me, brings the chance to clear out what no longer serves before diving head-first into the speed of Q4.

Problem: Carrying the Old into the New

After summer, many of us jump straight back into the fast lane, bringing along outdated routines, unfinished projects, or habits that no longer serve us.

The result? Extra weight that drains our energy and slows our momentum.

Solution: Release to Accelerate

Let go. It’s about creating room for clarity and focus by dropping what no longer helps; whether that’s a commitment, a system, or an old mindset to make space for new energy and sharper priorities.

Like in architecture; before a renovation, you don’t just add new layers. You first clear what’s outdated to create space for something new, stronger or more functional.

An Insight From Nutrition

In nutrition science, there is the elimination approach; you temporarily remove elements that may be silently draining energy or creating imbalance and then benefit from what truly fuels performance.

One inspiring resource that explores this principle is Dr. Mark Hyman’s work on functional medicine and elimination diets. His research shows that by identifying and releasing hidden disruptors, people regain focus, energy, and resilience.

I have experienced this myself. Under medical supervision, I went through an elimination diet for gluten removal. What surprised me was how quickly my energy levels shifted, my body felt lighter, clearer, and more balanced. It was a strong reminder that letting go is not always about restriction, but about making space for what truly supports us

3 Practical Tips to Kickstart September

🔹 #1 - Audit Your Environment & Systems

Take a look at both your physical space and the tools or systems you use daily. Which areas and processes support your focus and productivity, and which ones could be simplified or improved?

🔹 #2 - Schedule Micro-Declutters

Instead of trying to change everything at once, pick small, manageable moments to declutter; your inbox, your workspace, or even one part of your routine.

🔹 #3 - Identify One Energy Booster

Choose one activity, habit, or focus area that consistently fuels you; whether it’s a short walk, a focused deep work block, or learning something new. Protect this time like a meeting; it will amplify your energy for everything else.

Approaching the early days of September as a moment to release and refresh is a way to align your energy with what truly matters. By letting go of what no longer serves, you make room for what truly functions!
